CPW Firearms Safety Course – Basic (4 hr)
$89
4 hoursIn personWritten + practical
For students who have completed a CPW-certified hunter education course that's verified in CPW's records. This 4-hour, in-person course meets Colorado's Firearms Safety Course requirement to buy specified semiautomatic firearms (SSFs) on or after August 1, 2026. You must pass a written exam and a hands-on practical with a score of 90% or better.
For anyone who hasn't completed CPW-certified hunter education. This 12-hour, in-person course is taught over two days, as CPW requires (at least two different days), and meets Colorado's Firearms Safety Course requirement to buy specified semiautomatic firearms on or after August 1, 2026. You must pass a written exam and a hands-on practical with a score of 90% or better.
Take the Basic (4 hr) course. Hunter education must be verified in CPW's records, and hunter ed alone does not qualify you; you still need the Basic course.
No hunter education?
Take the Extended (12 hr) course. You don't need hunter education for this option.
Took hunter ed outside Colorado?
CPW requires out-of-state hunter education to be CPW-certified. Bring your card or record to a CPW office to get it verified before you book the Basic course.
Have a concealed carry permit or another class?
Those don't count toward this requirement, per CPW. You'll still need the Basic (with hunter ed) or Extended course.
Not sure? Email straightshotsolutionsllc@gmail.com and we'll help you figure it out. Your instructor confirms your eligibility for Basic or Extended in the CPW Firearms Safety System before class.
What is this?
Under Colorado's SB25-003, starting August 1, 2026, anyone buying or transferring a specified semiautomatic firearm (SSF) must hold a valid Firearms Safety Course Eligibility Card from their county sheriff and pass a Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) Firearms Safety Course taught in person by a CPW Firearms Safety Program instructor. After you pass, you have five years to buy SSFs.
To check whether a specific firearm is an SSF, see the list on the Colorado Firearms Dealer Division website. Official info: CPW Specified Semiautomatic Firearms page.
Before class: complete these CPW steps
Apply online. Create an account in CPW's Firearms Safety System (FSS) and complete your application. If you have hunter education, add it during this step. Start on CPW's site.
Visit your county sheriff's office. Provide a name-based background check and a government-issued photo ID, as your sheriff directs. Fees are collected here: the $52 CPW course record fee plus your sheriff's fee (varies by county). These are separate from our class fee and are charged whether or not your application is approved. Call your sheriff's office first, since some may not be processing applications yet.
Get your Firearms Safety Course Eligibility Card. The sheriff reviews your application and issues an eligibility card (valid 5 years). You'll get an email either way.
Take the course with us. Book your Basic or Extended class. We'll verify your eligibility in the Firearms Safety System.
Buy from a dealer. After you pass, the gun dealer (FFL) confirms your eligibility in the system when you purchase.
You need your sheriff-issued Firearms Safety Course Eligibility Card to take the SSF course, so have it in hand before class day. The card is only required for the CPW SSF course, not for our concealed carry classes.
